Going on Safari ?? What do you need to pack??

I have a short safari trip coming up and honestly am still obsessing on what to pack. Considering it will be just for 2 nights/ 3 days… I might as well pack the whole house as I can’t make up my mind. 😦

If you are like me ,here is a little guide I use for such trips :

  • Unless you are going on safari alone..avoid using hard -shell suitcases as it will be only be a hindrance in the vehicle or light air craft where the size, shape and rigidity of the suitcase will not work. Opt for a  hardy, lockable soft-sided bag or a duffel bag.
  • A good camera and binoculars (dont forget the charger for the camera)….extra camera batteries if you can
  • A wide brimmed hat to shade you from the sun and sunglasses
  • Sun screen lotion with high protection factor
  • A light jacket for chilly mornings and evenings
  • The trip can be quite bumpy therefore ladies ….a good bra
  • Avoid packing bright coloured clothes…..you wouldnt want to be targeted by the animals  in your neon pink top would you?  The best colours are the safari classics: olive, green and khaki.
  • Swimming costume and flip flops  if you will be staying in a hotel with pool
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Flash light
  • Scarf especially in dusty season
  • Mosquito repellant
  • Dont forget to pack your  tooth paste, tooth brush, comb, toilet roll ,deodorant etc. I carry my own soap as I hate those mini soap bars in hotels.
  • Wet wipes
  • Bottled water
  • Most safari vehicles have a basic first aid kit but you can always carry  pain killers. anti-histamines for allergies , eye drops in dusty areas .

Those are the basic essentials for the trip.

Wishing you a lovely week ahead.

Happy travels

  1. “Avoid packing bright coloured clothes…..you wouldnt want to be targeted by the animals in your neon pink top would you? The best colours are the safari classics: olive, green and khaki.” Very good advice. Most tourists do not think about there being a reason for the safari type of colors people wear. This can save lives.

  2. I have been on many safaris and this is definitely the right pack list! People forget the chilly mornings for early morning game drives when you are awake at 5am or 6am and they also may not consider it will be bumpy! Oh yes, they certainly can be. Great guide! #feetdotravel

  4. I have been on many game drives and this is a great list! Particularly about taking a jacket! It can be very cold on those early morning drives in particular!

  5. I know how that feels when you want to pack everything! I am heading over to Everest Base Camp and have been preparing my gear as well and it’s a difficult choice as I have to keep in mind, I have to carry everything on my back too! I’d love to go to a safari though some day and I will definitely refer back to this list!

  6. I haven’t been on a safari so far, but your packing list seems very helpful. I used to take my whole house with me on my travels, but now a backpack is usually more than enough. I will keep these tips in mind for when I finally go on a safari.

  7. These are really good tips! Having been on safari myself, it’s easy to forget that the mornings can be cold and you should take something warm for those 5am starts and yes, in certain parts of Africa, the roads are most definitely bumpy and a good bra is essential (I love that you have included this!). Thanks for sharing and for thinking of everything! #feetdotravel
